At a glance
Home-help pricing should be based on what needs doing, the expected time and any relevant extras. Ask for the proposed rate, minimum visit, travel arrangements and other costs before you confirm a booking.
Why a quoted rate isn't the whole price
An hourly figure can be useful, but it doesn't tell you whether there's a minimum visit, whether travel is charged, or what happens if the agreed work takes longer. Comparing two quotes means comparing the tasks and total charges as well as the headline number.
Start with the tasks and expected duration
A small, well-defined list may be quicker to assess than a broad request for “general help”. Explain whether the work is cleaning, laundry, shopping arrangements, household chores, companionship or gardening. Some services may have different pricing models because the equipment, access and work differ.
Questions to ask before agreeing a price
- What is the rate or fixed price for these particular tasks?
- Is there a minimum booking duration or minimum charge?
- Is travel or mileage additional, and when does it apply?
- Who pays for cleaning materials, shopping and other purchases?
- Does the quote include waste removal if garden work is involved?
- When is payment taken, and which methods are accepted?
- What is the cancellation or rescheduling policy?
One-off or regular visits?
Regular help may suit jobs that recur, such as laundry and ordinary tidying. A one-off visit can be suitable for a defined backlog or trial of the arrangement. Neither automatically means a discount. Ask what visit frequency is available and whether the quote changes if the tasks or schedule change.
When a relative is paying
A family member may pay while the person receiving help chooses the tasks. Confirm who accepts the quote, who receives invoices and whether updates can be shared with the person's agreement. Avoid putting financial login details or payment-card information into a basic enquiry form.
What to expect from Home Help Direct
Start with your postcode and a short description of the jobs. The practical scope, availability and applicable pricing need to be discussed and agreed before a booking is confirmed. This guide deliberately gives no unverified hourly rate or minimum.
